La Liga: Real Madrid fail to close gap on Barcelona after draw with Athletic Bilbao
Real Madrid blew the chance to pull themselves back into the La Liga title race, after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Athletic Bilbao on Saturday evening.
Leaders Barcelona were also held to a 2-2 draw by Celta Vigo earlier in the day, giving Madrid the chance to close the gap.
However, the champions failed to break down a stubborn Athletic side at the San Memes.
Zinedine Zidane’s men were also reduced to 10 men, after Sergio Ramos picked up his 24th red card as a Madrid player.
However, Cristiano Ronaldo almost snatched the win in the dying minutes, arching back to redirect a cross with a powerful header to the far corner, only to see Kepa calmly gather.
The gap between Real and Barca remains eight points, with El Clasico two weeks away.
